"Virtual testing of low-velocity impact on carbon fibre composites"
This industrial contract represents a research collaboration between AIRBUS Operations and IMDEA Materials Institute which aims at evaluating the damage resistance of several aerospace graded carbon-fibre materials to low-velocity impacts by means of advanced numerical methods.
The R&D project deals with the evaluation of the impact performance of composite materials against the low-energy impacts caused by tool-drops, operation mishandling or runway debris. The project goals are being tackled by means of computational mechanics based on the finite element approach, and considers the damage and erosion of materials due to the impact.
