Dr. Mónica Echeverry Rendón

Bioengineer, M.Sc. Biology, Ph.D. Material Science, Ph.D. Medical Science

Currently, she is the head of the BCD group. Her academic and professional background reflects multidisciplinary expertise in materials engineering, biology, and medicine. Her work focuses on the biological validation of materials and the development of new medical devices.

Guillermo Domínguez

M.Sc. Biomedical Engineering

Guillermo Domínguez is a Ph.D. student in the BCD Group at IMDEA Materials. He studied a B.Sc. in Materials Engineering at the Technical University of Madrid, and an M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College of London. His work focuses on the characteriaation of microstructure, corrosion and biocompatibility of Zn and Mg alloys for bone and cardiovascular applications.

Nafiseh Mollaei

 M.Sc. Materials Science and Engineering

Nafiseh Mollaei is a Ph.D. student in the BCD Group at IMDEA Materials. Her expertise is in materials characterisation, mechanical behaviour, and deformation mechanisms of metals, focusing on optimising thermomechanical processes to develop biodegradable metals. She designs and optimises 3D-printed Zn-based scaffolds for cardiovascular stents.

 

Luis Calero Lumbreras

 M.Sc. Biomedical Engineering

Luis Calero is a Ph.D. student in the BCD Group at IMDEA Materials Institute. He holds a degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de València and has a multidisciplinary background in biomaterials, biomechanics, and industrial design. His current research focuses on the introduction of geometrical gradients in Zn-based scaffolds by Laser Powder Bed Fusion, aiming to develop advanced biodegradable implants.

Dr. Yuyao Liu

Ph.D. Structural, Foundation and Materials Engineering

Dr. Yuyao Liu is a postdoctoral researcher in the BCD Group at IMDEA Materials Institute. Her academic and professional background reflects multidisciplinary expertise in chemistry, material science and engineering, 3D printing and biology. Her work focuses on biomimetic 3D-printed scaffolds for cartilage, bone and osteochondral regeneration.

Ángela García de la Camacha Díaz

 M.Sc. Materials Science and Engineering

Ángela de la Camacha is a Ph.D. student in the BCD group at IMDEA Materials Institute. Her multidisciplinary academic and professional background reflects long expertise in mechanics, 3D printing, material science and engineering. Her current work focuses on bioabsorbable multimaterial 3D printed scaffolds for cartilage, bone and osteochondral regeneration.

Aroa Mascaraque León

M.Sc. Data Science & Engineering

Research Assistant at IMDEA Materials Institute and Ph.D. candidate in Materials Engineering. She works within the Accelerated Materials Discovery group, led by Dr. Maciej Haranczyk. Her multidisciplinary background bridges biomedical engineering and data science, with a research focus on automation and machine learning for accelerated materials discovery. She develops robotic workflows that generate high-throughput experimental data, enabling predictive models and new approaches in materials research.

José Ignacio Delgado

M.Sc. Materials Engineering

José Ignacio Delgado is a Ph.D. student in the BCD group at IMDEA Materials Institute. He has a long and multidisciplinary background in materials and polymer science, from printed electronics to plastics for biomedical devices. His current research focuses on new thermoplastics used in dentistry in the clear aligners technique.

Dr. Mahdi Sabbaghian

Ph.D. Materials Science and Engineering

Dr. Mahdi Sabbaghian is a Marie-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at IMDEA Materials. He works on biodegradable, additively-manufactured magnesisum (mg.) alloys. His expertise is in their development, deformation and microstructural-property relationships. His aim is to research the effects of coatings on the corrosion behaviour and biological aspects of mg. alloys to be used in the human body.

Dr. Francesca Antonella Sepúlveda

Ph.D. Engineering Sciences (Materials Science)

She is a postdoctoral researcher at IMDEA Materials Institute. With a background in chemical engineering and materials science, her work bridges biomaterials and advanced manufacturing. She has expertise in the development and characterization of hybrid polymer systems, particularly double-network hydrogels and antimicrobial nanocomposites, for biomedical applications. Her current projects, conducted with Dr. Federico Sket in IMDEA’s In-situ Processing and Mechanical Characterization of Materials Group, focus on polymer–powder interactions and cohesion in binder-jetting processes; in parallel, she leads the biological evaluation of advanced metallic systems with Dr. Mónica Echeverry-Rendón in the BCD Group.
