BIOMET4D researcher Nourhan Hassan from the University Hospital Cologne presents a poster entitled “Smart 4D BIOdegradable METallic Shape-shifting Implants for Dynamic Tissue Resoration” at Africa Health ExCon2023.
As part of the conference, Dr. Hassan presented a poster entitled “Smart 4D BIOdegradable METallic Shape-shifting Implants for Dynamic Tissue Restoration”. Along with Dr. Hassan, the poster’s authors included Max Zinser, Thomas Krieg and Nadja Kröger.
Africa Health ExCon2023 was held at the Egypt International Exhibition Centre in Cairo, Egypt from June 6-10.
BIOMET4D introduces a novel concept in medical devices by developing autonomous shape-morphing loadbearing biodegradable metallic actuators for tissue expansion and regeneration.
The aim is to surpass the capabilities of current self-expanding metamaterials by achieving displacements and forces at least one order of magnitude higher.
These biodegradable actuators can be minimally invasively implanted and undergo controlled shape changes during the healing process, leading to tissue expansion and complete degradation coupled with tissue regeneration.
The long-term vision is to dynamically regenerate entire tissues, such as the nose or ear, presenting a paradigm shift in biomedical actuators.
