Multiscale Materials Modelling

Professor Javier Segurado Escudero graduated in Materials Engineering at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) in 1999 and got his Ph.D. in the same university in the year 2004. From 2008-2019 he was Associate Professor and in 2020 he obtained a Full Professor position in Solid Mechanics at the UPM. Additionally, since 2008 he holds a double appointment as researcher in IMDEA Materials Institute, where he leads the “Multiscale Materials Modeling” group. He is the coordinator of the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering research program of the institute, which groups 6 research teams of IMDEA. Prof. Segurado is a Fulbright scholar and has held visiting positions at UCLA, Los Alamos National Laboratoy (UAS), TU-Wien (Austria) and Mc Master University (Canada). Professor Segurado is author of more than 90 international papers in the field of computational solid mechanics and has more than 3700 citations and h-index of 31 (web of science). He has participated in more than 40 research projects with international, European and national funding, being principal investigator of 8 of them including FET-open and Clean-sky European projects. He has been included in the last year list of the top 2% scientists in the ranking developed by University of Stanford.

His research activities are focused on the simulation of the mechanical behavior of materials at different length scales and the coupling of these scales using multiscale approaches. He has worked on composites, metals, lattice-based materials and porous materials with the aim of determining the effect of the microstructure of these materials on their behavior, including elastic, plastic, visco-elastic and visco-plastic regimes as well as fracture, damage and fatigue response.

He is an expert in the development of models and simulation techniques in the field of computational micromechanics and approaches at lower length scales such as Molecular Dynamics, Discrete Dislocation Dynamics and Crystal Plasticity. He is also an expert in Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) based solvers for micromechanics and multiphysical problems.

As result of these research, he has generated some research open source codes, as the crystal plasticity tool set CAPSUL, nowadays licenced to e-Xstream, or FFTMAD, a generalist FFT solver for non-linear homogenization.

He has continuous collaborations with several worlwide research teams both in Europe and the Americas.
