The project HexaGB (Grain Boundaries in Hexagonal microstructures: Linking processing and properties in lightweight structural alloys) has started. The project is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities within the call Retos Investigación 2018.
The project is a partnership between UPM (coordinator) and IMDEA Materiales. The IMDEA’s subproject “Microstructure-scale investigation of grain boundary formation and behavior in hexagonal metallic alloys” focuses on the fundamental understanding of polycrystalline hexagonal microstructures (specifically in Mg-based alloys) at the microscopic scale of the grain structure. The most prominent applications pertain to weight reduction, fuel economy, and resulting reduction of greenhouse gases.
