IMDEA Materials and Yanshan University to establish joint laboratory to study metallic materials processing

  • The new platform will research solutions based on intelligent computing and advanced alloys for strategic sectors such as aerospace, energy, and ocean engineering.
  • The agreement also establishes a joint doctoral training program, promoting academic exchange and the development of scientists.

IMDEA Materials Institute and Yanshan University have signed an agreement to establish the International Joint Laboratory on Intelligent Computing Integrated Metallic Materials Innovative Processing.

The agreement, accompanied by a Memorandum of Understanding, marks a major milestone in scientific collaboration between the two institutions, creating a new international platform for innovation in advanced metallic materials processing.

The new Joint Laboratory has been conceived to advance research into intelligent computing and metallic materials, while bringing together expertise and resources from Spain and China to address some of the most pressing scientific and industrial challenges in metallic materials processing.

Initial research will focus on two key areas. The first involves the theoretical design and simulation of metastable phases in metallic materials, an area of growing importance as engineers and scientists seek new materials that combine strength, durability and low density for demanding environments such as aerospace, nuclear energy and ocean engineering.

The second area addresses technological barriers in the processing of lightweight steels and alloys, aiming to improve manufacturability, reduce defects, and enhance surface quality through advanced techniques and process optimisation.

The Joint Laboratory will build on a portfolio of collaborative projects funded by both Chinese and European institutions. These include initiatives supported by the China Scholarship Council, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education of China, the European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, and the Hebei Provincial Department of Science and Technology, among others.

Projects range from high-throughput alloy screening and virtual design to multiscale simulations and training programmes for innovative talent.

Headquartered at Yanshan University, the Joint Laboratory will be jointly directed by the Chinese institution and IMDEA Materials. Senior researchers and visiting scholars from both sides will participate in extended exchange visits to foster scientific dialogue and joint research.

Yanshan University and IMDEA Materials Institute have a preexisting relationship, with IMDEA Materials’ Scientific Director, Prof. Javier LLorca, appointed as an Honorary Professor at the university in 2023.

A joint PhD training framework will also enable students to undertake research visits of six to twenty-four months at the partner institution, encouraging the development of globally minded scientists equipped to tackle cross-border research challenges.
