IMDEA Materials recognised in the latest Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu accreditation ceremony

IMDEA Materials Institute has been recognised for its research excellence in the latest edition of the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu accreditations.

The event, held at CaixaForum Madrid, was presided over by the Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, who highlighted “the profound transformative capacity” of the recognised centres of excellence.

IMDEA Materials received the accreditation as a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence in the 2018 call and has maintained this title since. Representing the institute at the event were its Manager, Dr. Covadonga Rosado, its Scientific Director, Prof. Javier LLorca, and its Deputy Director, Dr. Jon Molina.

Dr. Rosado noted recognition as an important reminder of the high level of scientific research carried out by IMDEA Materials.

“Being a María de Maeztu unit of excellence in recent years has allowed us to create a strategic framework for the Institute, enabling us to think beyond and develop new lines of research that would have been unthinkable without this support,” she said.

“It is not only a recognition of excellence but also the key or perfect tool to take a further step in the development of our research activities and thus increase the impact of our activities on society.”

The Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Accreditations are the highest recognition for scientific centres in Spain. They are designed to identify and promote research centers that stand out for their impact, scientific relevance, and ability to lead research at an international level.

“It is our country’s way of acknowledging these institutions for the impact of their research on the well-being of citizens, their contribution to the development of a competitive and innovative industry, and their great ability to attract national and international research talent,” Minister Morant emphasised during the event.

Currently, IMDEA Materials is one of the three IMDEA institutes that have received this prestigious accreditation, along with IMDEA Nanoscience (Severo Ochoa Unit of Excellence) and IMDEA Energy (María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence).
