IMDEA Materials Institute has reinforced its commitment to international scientific collaboration during a visit from the Vice Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Mr. Yong Qiu.
The visit builds on the institute’s existing collaborations with leading Chinese research institutions, which include the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the National Engineering Research Centre of Light Alloy Net Forming.
IMDEA Materials also recently announced an agreement with Yanshan University to establish the International Joint Laboratory on Intelligent Computing Integrated Metallic Materials Innovative Processing.
The most recent visit with Vice Minister Qiu began with words of welcome from Prof. Jon Molina, Director of IMDEA Materials, and the Vice Minister, followed by a presentation from IMDEA Materials’ Scientific Director, Prof. Javier LLorca, who outlined the Institute’s cutting-edge research lines.
These include advanced capabilities in 3D and 4D characterisation of materials, multiscale materials modelling, virtual testing, computational and data-driven materials discovery, as well as expertise in metals, composites, nanomaterials and advanced porous materials.
A round table session then provided an opportunity to explore new pathways for collaboration between IMDEA Materials and China. The discussion was aimed at promoting academic and research cooperation.
The Chinese delegation was also invited to a guided visit of IMDEA Materials’ state-of-the-art Fire Testing Laboratory, led by Prof. De-Yi Wang, Principal Investigator at the Institute.
IMDEA Materials representatives present at the meeting included Prof. Molina, Prof. LLorca and Prof. Wang, along with the institute’s Deputy Director Dr. Damien Tourret, Director of Projects and Technology Miguel Ángel Rodiel, HR Manager Rosa Bazán, and Financial Manager Mar García.
“Strengthening collaborations with leading international research institutions, including those in China, is key to advancing materials science at the global scale,” said Prof. Molina. “This visit marks another step forward in fostering that vision,” he added.
In October, IMDEA Materials Institute will celebrate its first Chinese alumni reunion with a meeting at the 3rd World Materials Conference in Guilin, China.
