DIGIMATER-CM: Accelerating Materials Discovery through AI, Robotics and Autonomous Laboratories

Last week, researchers from IMDEA Materials Institute took part in the annual meeting of DIGIMATER-CM Digital Strategies autonomus Discovery, a collaborative initiative bringing together leading research groups across the Madrid region to advance the future of materials development.

Funded by the Comunidad de Madrid (Technologies 2024 Programme) and coordinated by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, DIGIMATER-CM aims to create a research platform that accelerates materials discovery through the integration of artificial intelligence, laboratory automation, robotics and data-driven experimentation.

The project is developing new digital strategies to optimise materials composition, processing and properties, while enabling autonomous experimentation through collaborative robots and AI-powered decision-making.

This approach has the potential to significantly reduce development times and unlock new opportunities for advanced materials innovation.

During the meeting, our researchers shared the latest progress from our activities within the project, exchanged knowledge with partners, and explored new opportunities for collaboration across disciplines.

At IMDEA Materials, the project is led by Prof. Javier Llorca, Dr. Mónica Echeverry Rendón and Dr. Maciej Haranczyk, contributing expertise in AI-driven materials discovery, laboratory automation, and advanced materials development.

Project partners include the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid (ICMM – CSIC), the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (ICTP-CSIC) and the Universidad de Alcalá.
