IMDEA Materials Institute welcomed a delegation from Abioinnova and Salamanca City Council earlier this week to explore potential collaborations in additive manufacturing technologies for the biomedical sector.
Abioinnova is a high-tech incubator developed within the framework of the Salamanca Tech initiative. The project aims to promote innovation and biotechnology transfer while strengthening technology transfer to industry, internationalisation, and R&D&I activities. The initiative also seeks to promote the creation and consolidation of new innovative companies in the biotechnology sector.
The visit provided an opportunity to showcase IMDEA Materials’ research capabilities and infrastructure in advanced manufacturing and biomaterials. In recent years, the institute has made significant investments in the biomedical field and currently hosts four research groups dedicated to regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, biometals, and bioinspired materials.
The delegation was welcomed by IMDEA Materials Director Prof. Jon Molina Aldareguia, together with Principal Investigators, Dr. Mónica Echeverry Rendón, from the Biometals Coatings and Devices (BCD) Research Group, and Dr. Pedro J. Díaz Payno, from the Tissue Engineering and Biomedical Materials Research Group.
Representatives from Salamanca City Council, Abioinnova, and the University of Salamanca included Pedro Martínez Córdoba, Miguel Pascual Olaguíbel, Andrea García Vicente, Alberto Fraile García, Dr. Raúl Pitoro, and Armando González Muñoz.
During the visit, the delegation received an overview of IMDEA Materials’ capabilities in metallic additive manufacturing using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technologies, as well as its advanced processing, characterisation, simulation, and modelling facilities.
The meeting concluded with discussions on future opportunities for collaboration in advanced biomedical manufacturing and innovation.
IMDEA Materials would like to thank the entire Abioinnova team and the Salamanca delegation for their visit and looks forward to continuing discussions on potential joint initiatives in the biomedical field.
