External use of TEM

DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT

FEG S/TEM (Talos F200X, FEI) equipped with a chemical analysis system via energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), a digital CMOS camera able to acquire images with a maximum resolution of 4×4 k, a tomography system to perform computed tomography in TEM, STEM and EDS modes, and a Hysitron PicoIndenter PI95 holder to perform in-situ nano-mechanical tests (S/TEM-Ind). The equipment offers a TEM point resolution ≤ 0.25 nm at 200 kV, information threshold ≤ 0.12 nm at 200 kV, and a STEM-HAADF at 200 kV ≤ 0.16 nm.

EQUIPMENT RESPONSIBLES

Scientific responsible: Dr. Jon Molina-Aldareguia (jon.molina@imdea.org)

Techical responsable: Manuel Avella (manuel.avella@imdea.org)

WORKING MODES AND RESERVATION PROCEDURE

Three working modes can be distinguished, depending on the type of measurement:

  1. Conventional mode: the equipment can be booked per hours to perform characterization in TEM and STEM modes and chemical analyses via EDS. In order to do so, interested users shall contact with the technical responsible via email (Manuel Avella (manuel.avella@imdea.org)). The technical responsible will send a confirmation to the user. The equipment will be always used under the supervision of the technical responsible.
  2. Tomography mode: tomography in TEM, STEM and EDS modes. In order to make a reservation, interested users shall contact with the technical responsible via email (Manuel Avella (manuel.avella@imdea.org), detailing the number of people who will carry out the measurements, the purpose of the measurements, and the preliminary investigations performed in the samples to be analysed. The technical responsible and the scientific responsible will evaluate the proposal and assign a measurement time (in 4 hours blocks).
  3. Nanomechanics mode: in-situ mechanical test inside the TEM by using a Hysitron PIcoindenter PI95 holder. In order to make a reservation, interested users shall contact with the technical responsible via email (Manuel Avella (manuel.avella@imdea.org)), detailing the number of people who will carry out the measurements, the purpose of the measurements, and the preliminary investigations performed in the samples to be analysed. The technical responsible and the scientific responsible will evaluate the proposal and assign a measurement time (in 6 hours blocks).
