Top of the class: IMDEA Materials Institute researchers highlighted among Stanford University’s annual list of world’s top scientists

IMDEA Materials Institute has been well represented once again on Stanford University’s list of the world’s top 2% Scientist Rankings.

Notably, IMDEA Materials’ Scientific Director, Prof. Javier LLorca, becomes one of the top 200 ranked scientists worldwide in the Materials Science field.

“Two of our missions are to conduct excellent science and attract international talent to the Community of Madrid,” said the Director of IMDEA Materials, Prof. José Manuel Torralba, one of 10 of the Institute’s scientists highlighted in the rankings.

“The fact that more than half of our group leaders are in this ranking, and that half of them are foreign, confirms that the institute is consistently working towards achieving these two missions,” he added.

Stanford University publishes two rankings annually, with the first dedicated to research activities from the previous 12 months, while the second is based on lifetime achievement.

The rankings are based on bibliometric data from the Scopus database and are considered the most prestigious of their kind. They consider information relating to the number of citations per publication (h-index) and the researcher’s relevance to the published works (hm-index).

Several IMDEA Materials researchers featured on both lists this year. Including Profs. LLorca and Torralba, these are Dr. De-Yi Wang, Prof. Carlos González, Prof. Javier Segurado, Dr. Teresa Pérez Prado, Dr. Johan Christensen and Dr. Ilchat Sabirov.

The biggest mover among the Institute’s researchers was Dr. Wang, who moved up nearly 20,000 places from last year’s rankings to now be considered among the top 1500 materials scientists from around the world.

Additionally, Drs. Maciej Haranczyk and Harun Tüysüz were named on the Yearly Achievement list for their work over the past 12 months. Dr. Tüysüz’s is IMDEA Materials’ newest Principal Investigator, and his research in 2023 was carried out while affiliated with the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research.
