Emilio Viciana, Regional Minister of Education, Science, and Universities, highlights cutting-edge research at IMDEA Materials

Yesterday, IMDEA Materials Institute had the honor of receiving a visit from Emilio Viciana, Regional Minister of Education, Science, and Universities of the Community of Madrid. During his tour of the facilities, Viciana praised the institute’s work and emphasised the importance of its contributions to society.

“Every time I visit an IMDEA, I leave very happy and very satisfied,” he expressed. “[IMDEA Materials] is one of seven advanced research institutes in the Community of Madrid, focusing on the design, modulation, and testing of various types of materials, with numerous applications that have a direct impact on society.”

He was accompanied on his visit by Dr. Ana Ramírez de Molina, Vice-councillor for Universities, Research and Science and Dr. Marina Pilar Villegas Gracia, General Director of Research and Technological Innovation, both from the Community of Madrid.

Among the innovations highlighted by the Regional Minister were the medical prostheses designed using 3D technology.

“These prostheses are personalised and use absorbable materials, which eliminates the need for a second surgery to remove them from the patient, which is very important,” noted Viciana.

He also mentioned advancements in material coatings for batteries, crucial for the safety and efficiency of mobile devices. “These coatings prevent batteries from catching fire and causing fires, and improve their performance to be much more efficient,” he added.
