IMDEA Materials opens a Technology Transfer and Innovation Unit

As part of our strategic plan 2020-2025, we have recently opened a Technology Transfer and Innovation Unit (TTIU) to promote and support the commercial exploitation of the R&D results obtained within our projects. The head of the TTIU, Dr. Javier Rubio, joined the Institute on the 1st of March 2020, and he is already implementing the first initiatives towards increasing our capabilities to bring research results to the market. The main objectives of this new unit are:

  • Industrial property management in order to turn the inventions and scientific progress into real (and marketable) products that have an impact on the society and produce economic return to IMDEA Materials to keep on supporting further research.
  • Implementation of valorisation mechanisms to evaluate the potential of project results considering different factors (technology, scalability, market maturity, financial feasibility, capacity to create jobs, etc.).
  • Development of a plan for exploitation and transfer, that will promote more links with industry, provide a clear policy to patent and create structures and processes to support and enhance knowledge/technology transfer.
  • Fostering the creation of IMDEA Materials´ Spin-out companies

As explained by Miguel Ángel Rodiel, Projects and Technology Director, “This unit is an important commitment of the Institute to strengthen our current technology transfer activities. Until now, our knowledge and technology transfer has been carried out mainly through licensing agreements in the framework of collaborative projects with industry, but now we also want to promote and support the creation of new companies based on our high value R&D results.”

The Technology Transfer and Innovation Unit is already fully operational. Contact: techtransfer.materials@imdea.org
