How can science help prevent natural disasters or reduce their impact when they occur? This question will be at the heart of “Science in the Face of Natural Disasters“, a public event bringing together researchers from the IMDEA Institutes, as well as firefighters from the Community of Madrid as part of the 2026 European Researchers’ Night.
The event will take place on September 25 at 18:00 at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid and is open to the general public.
Researchers from the seven IMDEA Institutes, including IMDEA Materials, will share the stage with emergency response professionals to discuss how scientific research contributes to disaster prevention, risk assessment, emergency management and post-disaster recovery.

Representing the materials science perspective, IMDEA Materials Institute will highlight how advances in materials engineering can improve the resilience, safety and reliability of infrastructures and technologies exposed to extreme events.
During the event, firefighters will explain the challenges they face during emergency interventions, while IMDEA researchers will showcase current scientific developments and explore how future innovations could further support disaster response and mitigation efforts.
The activity will be held in person at the Residencia de Estudiantes (C/ Pinar 21, Madrid) and will also be streamed live through the Residencia’s channel. Attendance is free, although prior registration is required.
